What is ‘Devil’s Money’ about?

The song “Devil’s Money” immediately grabbed the attention of Kentuckians with a reference to Bardstown in the first line. The song goes on to talk about Kutter’s great-grandfather, a deacon in the area who struggled to keep his church doors open. That is, until he started selling moonshine.

“Great-granddaddy was a deacon but he struggled breakin’ even ‘til he started runnin’ bottles out the bible belt,” the lyrics say. “Some called him a sinner, only knew him for his sins. Some called him a saint ‘cause they knew where that cash went.”

The chorus then continued, saying while salvation can’t be bought, congregation members thought of the church relatively positively. “They’d say, bless the man with the still in the holler, turning corn into shine, shine into dollars. Unholy water, flowing like milk and honey, built that Lord’s house with the devil’s money.”

Kutter reveals to her listeners the city where the church is located, Bardstown, but doesn’t specify further than that. The videos posted along with the music on both Instagram and TikTok feature snippets of a church in the background, which may help some of the locals narrow it down.
